*Cue holiday music* It’s the moooost wonderful time of the year! And trust me, this year we definitely need some good cheer, am I right?? One of the few good things that came out of 2020 was the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. I know I’m not alone when I say this game got me through this year. It was my perfect escape when everything just seemed to be getting a little too overwhelming.
I love the Animal Crossing franchise. I used to play on my GameCube all the time (oh boy, did I just date myself? LOL)! One of my favorite things in the game is collecting fossils. I love hunting those little guys and digging them up, so I figured, why not add a little bit of my island to my Christmas tree this year?
This pattern is simple enough for beginners and works up quick, making these little guys a great last minute gift! Below you’ll find the basic pattern for an unburied fossil ornament. You can purchase a PDF of the full pattern here in my Etsy shop. The full version includes several variations to try out, as well as a pattern for the buried fossil ornament. Alright, let’s get crocheting!
Materials:
- 3mm & 3.5mm/E hooks
- Worsted weight yarn in blue & white
- Stuffing
- Tapestry needle
- White thread
- Piece of yarn, twine, or other material to make loop for hanging
Sides (make 2):
- Sc 6 in MR. (6)
- Inc around. (12)
- [Sc, inc] around. (18)
- [Sc 2, inc] around. (24)
- [Sc 3, inc] around. (30)
- [Sc 4, inc] around. (36)
- [Sc 5, inc] around. (42)
- [Sc 6, inc] around. (48)
- [Sc 7, inc] around. (54)
- [Sc 8, inc] around. (60) F/O, weave in ends
Spiral:
- Using 3mm hook & white, ch 32. Hdc in 3rd ch from hook, 2 hdc in next stitch, [hdc, 2hdc in next st] across. This will naturally create a corkscrew that you can manipulate into a spiral when you sew it on. F/O, weave in end.
Star:
- Using 3mm hook and white, sc 5 in MR. (5)
- Inc around. (10)
- [Sl st, ch 3, sl st back into first ch made, sl st in next st] around. (5 points made) F/O, weave in end.
Circle:
- Using 3mm hook and white, sc 6 in MR. (6)
- [Sc 2, inc] around. (8) F/O, weave in end.
Assembly:
Place the sides together with the wrong sides facing each other. Join blue anywhere along the sides, ch 1, sc in same st, taking care to go through both pieces in order to join them. Continue to sc around the entire edge, through both pieces. Begin stuffing once you are approximately 2/3 of the way around and continue until the end.
I prefer to pin the pieces onto the sides before sewing to ensure proper placement. I also prefer to sew them on with thread instead of using yarn, as it’s easier to get the perfect spiral placement this way.
Once you have all the pieces sewn together, take a piece of yarn, twine, or material of your choice and feed it through the top or the ornament. Tie a knot, and there you have it!
