Plague Doctor C2C Pillow

October 24, 2020

Halloween is by far my favorite day of the year. I just love everything about it – the crisp fall air, the pumpkins, witches, ghosts, and goblins…and of course, the candy, LOL! I have a friend who loves Halloween just as much, if not more, than I do. She just happens to have an October birthday, so every year I try to make her something original and Halloween-y as part of her birthday present. Since I do this every year, it’s starting to get more and more difficult to come up with good ideas.

Since I’m still on my C2C kick, I decided to make another accent pillow, but I didn’t want the typical fall or Halloween imagery in my design. I’ve always been intrigued by the Plague Doctor, and this image is quickly becoming one of my favorite creepy characters. So I decided to whip up a cute little Plague Doctor pillow for my friend using a corner to corner panel I designed. He’s a little creepy and a lot cute, so why not add him to your Halloween decorations this year?

Depending on which stitch and size crochet hook you use, your finished size may be larger or smaller than mine. I chose worsted weight yarn and a 5mm/H hook, and I used the mini C2C stitch (using half double crochet instead of double crochet). My pillow was approximately 14″x14″. This panel could easily be worked in a variety of stitches, such as single crochet, bobble stitch, or classic C2C. You could even work this up as a mini cross stitch if you want!

Materials:

  • 5mm/H crochet hook
  • Worsted weight yarn in black, purple, gray, & white
  • Pillow form (size depends on your finished panel size)
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Make 2 panels, one for the front side and one for the back. For the pillow I made, I chose to make the back panel all one color because it worked up super fast. You could easily use two design panels or a panel with a different design for the back for added versatility. Finish each panel by working a round of single crochet around the edge, working 2 single crochets per square, and working a [sc, chain 2, sc] for each corner.

Next, place the panels together with the wrong sides facing each other. Work a row of single crochet around the border of the panels, working through BOTH panels, and working 3 single crochets in each corner. I like to work the single crochet around the first three sides, insert the pillow form, then finish up working the final side. For those that like to work from a graph, you can find it just below:
