C2C David Bowie Pillow

September 28, 2020

September and October are always busy months for me craft-wise. I’m always in the midst of making stock for craft shows and getting ready for the holidays. Oh, and I have a million birthdays to think about (okay, not really, but sometimes it feels that way, lol). I love trying to come up with a unique gift each year to give each friend when their special day rolls around, and this year I had a hankerin’ for a little bit of home decor, so I decided to make some throw pillows!

I’ve also been OBSESSED with corner to corner crochet lately, so why not try it out on my first pillow design? I absolutely love the versatility of this technique – if you can make it with pixels, you can crochet it. Being a child of the 80s who grew up playing 8-bit computer games, this SPEAKS TO ME. For real.

So here’s a little background: I love David Bowie. I have a friend who also loves David Bowie. Annnd that’s it. That’s all the inspiration I needed, haha! So let’s do this!

Materials:

  • Pillow form (I used a 14 inch square pillow, the size you need will depend on the finished size of your panels and which stitch you use)
  • Worsted weight yarn
  • 5MM/H crochet hook

Pattern:

For this pattern, you will make two separate panels that will be crocheted together around the pillow form. I chose to do the Bowie panel on the front and a solid color on the back panel, but you could also do two Bowie panels if you like. Or, as a bonus, I created a “Heroes” panel that you could use for the back panel. You can find that panel here.

The finished size of your panels will be determined by your hook size and the type of stitch you use. While I created this pattern with c2c in mind, and I crocheted MY pillow using that technique, there’s no reason it couldn’t be worked in single crochet, or a bauble stitch! Heck, you could even use this grid to create a small cross-stitch project if you like!

I finished each of my panels by adding a row of single crochet around the edge, working 2 stitches per square and a (sc, ch2, sc) in each corner. Next, while holding both panels together with the wrong sides facing each other, I worked another row of single crochet, working 3 sc in each corner, to sew the panels together. Once I had 3 sides completed, I inserted the pillow form and finished working the final side.

Okay, enough of the boring stuff, let’s get crocheting! Enjoy!

And for those of you (myself included) who prefer to work with written instructions, I got you covered as well:
