Truth: we all know someone who is going through something. Fighting something. Surviving. Thriving. It might even be you! Having a great support system can help you navigate through tough times in ways you may not even think of. I speak from experience – about a month ago, my husband, Mike, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. We’ve gone through months of the unknown – why was he in such pain? Why was he losing so much weight? Why are all his tests coming back normal? We were bounced from doctor to doctor, specialist to specialist, and, as I’m sure you’ve guessed, it totally sucked. We were scared for sure, but add to that the fact he was no longer able to work because of the pain he was in, and it made for a very scary and stressful situation.
After having a bone marrow biopsy, our questions were finally answered. Was it the answer we wanted? No, absolutely not. But, as scary as hearing a cancer diagnosis is, it was almost as if a weight had been lifted. Now we KNEW. Now we could FIGHT. So we are fighting with everything we’ve got!
We are very fortunate to have a wonderful support system surrounding us, helping us in all sorts of ways. Ways we will never be able to pay back, but we will absolutely be trying for some time to come. So I came up with this simple pattern for anyone out there who wants to show support for someone they love, for a friend, a family member, hell, for people you’ve never even met. Trust me, it helps. You may not think wearing a pin or sporting a key chain makes a difference, but I’m here to tell you it does.
I promise not all of my posts and patterns will be so heavy, lol! I really debated making this the first pattern I put out there, because I didn’t want to be so serious, but this is what is going on with me right now so I figured, might as well be open and honest and get it out there!
The thing I like about this super easy pattern is you can basically use any hook and any yarn to make it whatever size you like. They can be made up into key chains, pins, magnets, really any way you want to use them!
MATERIALS:
- 3.75MM (F) crochet hook
- Worsted weight yarn in preferred color
- Corresponding colored thread for tacking ribbon together
ABBREVIATIONS:
- Sc – single crochet
- St(s) – stitch(es)
- Ch(s) – Chain stitch(es)
- Sl st(s) – slip stitch(es)
PATTERN:
Row 1: Ch 31, sc in 2nd ch from hook & the next 11 chs, 2 sc in the next 6 chs, sc in remaining 12 chs, ch 1, turn. (36)
Row 2: For this row, you can use the mirror crochet technique to give it a more uniform look. This is completely optional. This video (not mine) is an excellent tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Xwgcxh7FAU If you don’t want to use this technique, no problem, simply crochet as normal. Sc 15, 2 sc in the next 6 sts, sc 15, ch 1, turn. (42)
Row 3: Sl st around the entire edge of the ribbon, making 2 sl sts in each corner, ending with a sl st to the first st. The increases you made in rows 1 & 2 will naturally shape it. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Using your corresponding colored thread, shape the ribbon and tack it down to secure it.
And that’s that! We all know someone who could use some love and support, or maybe there’s a cause you feel passionately about. Spread awareness, spread the love, be someone’s support system! It goes a long way. Trust me. <3
