Labyrinth Firey Ornament

April 4, 2020

What a strange time we are living, eh? So crazy, unpredictable, and downright scary on some days. I, like so many others, am now spending as much time as possible at home, trying to find ways to pass the time and make these uncertain days a little more fun. So for me, that means spending a lot more time crafting and crocheting, designing, binge-watching all the things, and just generally trying to weather this storm with my husband and dog.

I’ve found myself revisiting my favorite TV shows and movies of my childhood a lot lately. The Goonies, The Neverending Story, and, my all-time favorite, Labyrinth! So I came up with this pattern for a little Firey Christmas ornament, because it made me happy, and that’s what I (and I’m sure so many others) need right now! And besides, I’ve seen a lot of people breaking out the Christmas decorations again, so why not? Make this little guy and hang him up! Stay home and stay safe, everyone!

Materials:

  • 3.5mm/E hook
  • Worsted weight yarn in red and small amounts of orange and pink
  • Small amount of lightweight black yarn or black thread
  • Two white, 2 holed buttons
  • Fiberfill stuffing

Abbreviations:

  • Ch(s) = Chain(s)
  • Sc = Single crochet
  • Inc = Increase
  • Dec = decrease
  • MR = Magic (adjustable) ring
  • F/O = Fasten off

Head Panels (Make 2):

Row 1: Ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook & each chain across, ch 1, turn. (9)
Row 2: Inc twice, sc 5, inc twice, ch 1, turn. (13)
Row 3: Sc across, ch 1, turn. (13)
Row 4: Inc, sc 11, inc, ch 1, turn. (15)
Row 5: Sc across, ch 1, turn. (15)
Row 6: Inc, sc 13, inc, ch 1, turn. (17)
Row 7: Inc, sc 15, inc, ch 1, turn. (19)
Rows 8-11: Sc across, ch 1, turn. (19)
Row 12: Dec, sc 15, dec, ch 1, turn. (17)
Row 13: Dec, sc 13, dec, ch 1, turn. (15)
Row 14: Sc across, ch 1, turn. (15)
Row 15: Dec, sc 11, dec, ch 1, turn. (13)
Row 16: Sc across, ch 1, turn. (13)
Row 17: Dec twice, sc 5, dec twice. (9)

F/O and weave in the ends. You should end up with two panels like this:

Nose (use continuous rounds):

Round 1: Sc 6 in MR. (6)
Round 2: Sc around, (6)
Round 3: [Sc 2, inc] around. (8)
Round 4: [Sc 3, inc] around. (10)
Round 5: Sc 9, inc. (11)
Round 6: Sc 10, inc. (12)
Round 7: Sc 11, inc. (13)

Ears (Make 2):

Row 1: Ch 2, sc in 2nd chain from hook, ch 1, turn. (1)
Row 2: Inc, ch 1, turn. (2)
Row 3: Inc across, ch 1, turn. (4)
Row 4: Inc, sc 2, inc, ch 1, turn. (6)
Row 5-12: Sc across, ch 1, turn. (6)

F/O, leaving a tail. Fold the ends of each ear until they meet and use the tail to sew together, creating a curve in the ear. (This is demonstrated in the bottom ear in the picture above.)

Assembly:

Before you sew the head panels together, you will need to sew the nose and eyes on. Next, place the two head panels together and put the ears in between the two panels. Sew the ears in place by sewing through BOTH panels so they are secure.

Once you have done this attach your red yarn to the outside edge of the head panels and sew them together by single crocheting around the edge through both panels. When you get to the ears, only single crochet through the front panel, as the ears are already attached.

Cut several strands of red, orange, and pink yarn and attach them at the top of the head, around the ears, and around the neck like in the picture above. Finally, make a loop to hang your ornament simply by making a chain of at least 15, then attaching to the top middle of the head.

In these strange times, it’s important to remember all the little things that make us happy and help us feel calm and comforted. I hope you get a few hours of enjoyment making this little guy, and, as always, thanks for stopping by. Please stay safe and healthy!
